Sheet Rock and Drywall Recall Information

Find out if you can be reimbursed for remediation

Do you have bad sheetrock (or drywall) that was made in China? If you built or remodeled your home between 2004 and 2006, you may have gotten contaminated sheetrock without knowing it. Many times contractors and subcontractors bought less expensive imported wallboard which does not show signs of contamination until its components degrade over time, releasing sulfur compounds. You may have already replaced this toxic drywall, or you may be waiting on legislation or litigation for repayment. You may want to get drywall testing to find out if you got imported plaster, since not all imported material from China contains impurities that can tarnish copper, create breathing problems, and ruin your home's wiring, air conditioning, and even your picture frames. The total level of damage is unknown, but the cost of replacing sheet rock can be enormous.

One builder, Lennar homes, has already started replacing plaster in houses that may contain sulfur compounds. Many houses rebuilt after Hurricane Katrina and Rita in Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, and Alabama are said to have bad wallboard, but new homes in California, Arizona, Nevada, and other states may have used the same building materials since they cost less or replaced construction supplies that were unavailable.

Notes and Special Information

Special note: Not all imported drywall is toxic, so get it tested before taking a big step like replacing all of your plaster.
